Who Are You?
You can start doing things & make real headway and people will say “Brilliant! Well done! That’s good!” But then another crowd will start up “Who are you? Who said you could do that?” Just as some will build you up. others will do their best to knock you over. Oddly enough it will happen in situations when even people have the go ahead or authority.
Questions are valid sometimes but they can be a subtle or not so subtle weapon of detractors.
Looking at John the Baptist.
John 1 [ESV]19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20 He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” 21 And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22 So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
25 They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”26 John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, 27 even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” 28 These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
The Religious types came down on John like a bag of bricks and yet they were missing seeing what he did. In their eyes he was a nobody and yet they were the ones that were as blind as bats to a new reality. To his credit John was really on the ball , as the following day.
29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
That kind of talk would drive the establishment nuts! Later it was Jesus rounded on as he came to render the old order obsolete. “Did you see that? He just told that guy his sins are forgiven. Who does he think he is God? “.
Also if you remember Jesus says we will be able to do things in his name.
John 14.12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. 13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me[e] anything in my name, I will do it.
Will it be a smooth ride? Will we have it easy? Expect to be questioned as to who you are even by your co-workers.!!
Mark9.38 John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name,[a] and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.” 39 But Jesus said, “Do not stop him, for no one who does a mighty work in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. 40 For the one who is not against us is for us.
